Cleary Doyle is committed to ensuring greater diversity in its workplace where all team members are encouraged and facilitated to reach their full potential.
Mary Griffith, Senior Quantity Surveyor, Cleary Doyle
Mary Griffith is a Senior Quantity Surveyor at Cleary Doyle. Since Mary joined Cleary Doyle in 2004, She has worked on all project types, including residential, commercial, pharmaceutical, heritage and fit-outs.
In her role as Senior Quantity Surveyor, Mary engages with all members of the project team, from client design teams to the supply chain, and Cleary Doyle’s contract managers, project and site managers, site QS’s and supporting staff. She also oversees the Cleary Doyle surveying team and mentors QS graduates at the beginning of their careers in construction.
What does your role in Cleary Doyle involve?
Construction is a dynamic and exciting field in which to work. Cleary Doyle is an innovative contractor continually evolving to stay at the forefront of the changing construction environment.
My key functions are reviewing areas of development regarding surveying with management, progressing quality procedures and CPD programmes, and facilitating the surveying team in achieving their goals to protect Cleary Doyle’s financial and contractual entitlements on all projects.
I work with the senior management team to set goals for the surveying and other teams and develop strategies that monitor and deliver these goals.
What are the most rewarding aspects of your work?
I mentor young QS graduates to ensure they are competent in their work areas. In this work, I create pathways for them to obtain their SCSI chartership. This is vital to maintaining a high professional standard of surveying within the company.
Every day brings a different challenge. However, our commitment to delivering a client’s requirements on time, on budget and to the highest quality achievable is foremost in every action.
The highlight of every project is substantial completion when the client obtains and is satisfied with the finished product.
How has Covid-19 impacted on your work?
Events of the past year have changed many aspects of how I work. Previously, I was fortunate enough to work from home several days a week. During the lockdowns, I have been working from home five days a week, with the added challenge of family members carrying out their online schooling in the next room.
Weekly site visits have been replaced by daily Zoom or Microsoft Teams video conferences and meetings. In these, team members from different locations table documents on which they are working and have detailed project discussions.
The introduction of video conferencing has been one of the major positive changes in my working day over the past 12 months, and one which I consider will continue to enhance communications between our teams going forward.
Why would you recommend a career in Quantity Surveying?
Quantity surveying is a very exciting career for any young person to consider. It has been a great career choice for me. No working day is the same, and I am always learning new skills. While I work closely with clients and the senior management team, I also take great pleasure in mentoring the next generation of QS’s coming through the company.
The setup and breadth of Cleary Doyle projects mean that I have built up a broad range of skills and competencies. I look forward to continuing as part of the company’s teams to deliver many prestigious projects in the years to come.
